William C. Metzger, 77, Of Beacon

BEACON, N.Y. -- William C. Metzger, a lifelong resident of Beacon, died Sunday, Dec. 20, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. He was 77. 

He was born Nov. 5, 1938, in Beacon to the late Clifford and Dorothy Wheeler Metzger. 

Metzger was a retired lieutenant commander for the U.S. Coast Guard, serving from 1959-91. He was also a retired manager for IBM in East Fishkill. He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church of Beacon, where he was the choir director and on the vestry. He was a former ski instructor, a supporter of the Army women's basketball team and an avid golfer. 

He was predeceased by his grandmother, Sarah Wheeler, who raised him; his aunts and uncles, William and Marion Wheeler and Raymond and Reta Detweiler; and two cousins, Sgt. Raymond Detweiler, who was killed in action March 23, 1945 in, England, and Reta Rogers. 

He is survived by his wife, Carol; three children, Janet and her husband David Best of Manlius, N.Y., Melinda Metzger of Danbury, Conn., and Paul Metzger and his fiance Kelly Baker of LaGrangeville; six grandchildren; three sisters; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. 

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, at Libby Funeral Home Inc., 55 Teller Ave., Beacon. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, at St. Luke's Cemetery, Wolcott Avenue, Beacon.
